On May 22, 2024, the Directorate of Human Resources at Universitas Gadjah Mada (DSDM UGM), in collaboration with the UGM Vocational School (SV UGM), launched an English Language Training program specifically designed for the university’s administrative staff. This comprehensive training program, conducted both online and offline, witnessed enthusiastic participation from 143 administrative staff members across various departments within UGM.

The opening ceremony was inaugurated by the Secretary of the Directorate of Human Resources, Endri Heriyanto, S.H., M.Kn., who emphasized the importance of continual skill enhancement in his opening remarks. “When we talk about a campus that plays a significant role on the global stage, it is imperative for our administrative staff to consistently upgrade their competencies through various training programs. In addition to this training, DSDM also facilitates professional/skill certification funding assistance and promotes career development through competency tests. We hope that all participants are eager to engage in this training and that upon completion, they can apply their newfound skills, for instance, by organizing an English Day in their respective units,” said Endri Heriyanto.

The Manager of Training Collaboration and Career Development at the UGM Vocational School, Faiz Zamzami, S.E., M.Acc., QIA, also addressed the participants, underscoring the critical importance of the English Language Training. “This training, offered in both online and offline formats, is crucial. UGM currently hosts numerous International Undergraduate Programs (IUP) and frequently welcomes international guests. Hence, it is essential for our administrative staff to enhance their English language proficiency,” he stated.

Following these opening addresses, the training rules and guidelines were elaborated by the Head of the Assessment and Training Sub-Directorate, Erna Kartini, S.E., MBA. She emphasized the mandatory attendance and full participation in the English Language Training. Additionally, she encouraged participants to develop other skills such as task management and time management during the course. “As UGM becomes increasingly global, with a growing number of international partners and students, staff members are likely to encounter cultural differences. It is crucial for them to possess the necessary skills to interact effectively within an international context,” she added.

The training program commenced with an introductory session on Cross-Cultural Communication delivered by Nabilla Kusuma Vardhani, S.I.P., M.A. Nabilla, a lecturer at SV UGM and a seasoned practitioner in various training programs, provided an in-depth presentation on the importance of Cross-Cultural Communication. She covered the fundamental concepts and practical examples of how to interact courteously with foreign guests and handle situations involving unfamiliar individuals.

The opening ceremony concluded with a detailed briefing from the organizing committee regarding the training schedule and logistics. Participants were also introduced to several key speakers who will be leading various training sessions throughout the program. The event marked the beginning of an important initiative aimed at equipping UGM’s administrative staff with essential language skills to navigate and thrive in an increasingly globalized environment.
