Yogyakarta, June 4, 2024 – In a bid to cultivate the next generation of exceptional leaders, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has launched the “Gadjah Mada Leadership Development Program (GLDP): Effective Team Leadership for Coordinators.” This innovative training initiative, spearheaded by the Directorate of Human Resources (DSDM UGM), aims to provide the university’s coordinators with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in leadership roles. Conducted in a hybrid format that combines both synchronous and asynchronous learning methods, the program spans from June 4 to July 5, 2024, and involves 48 coordinators from various departments within UGM.

A Vision for the Future

UGM Rector Prof. dr. Ova Emilia, M.Med.Ed., Sp.OG., Ph.D, officially opened the program, underscoring the GLDP’s pivotal role in enhancing leadership capacities at the university. “The GLDP program represents a significant breakthrough in developing leadership capacity within UGM. Leaders must serve as role models throughout the leadership process, encompassing both capacity—pertaining to a leader’s competencies—and credibility, which involves key principles such as sharp vision, honesty, loyalty, morality, responsibility, and a commitment to truth,” stated Prof. Ova Emilia. She expressed her hope that the program would not only boost the capabilities and competencies of future leaders at UGM but also inspire positive change, nurture an innovative spirit, and drive institutional achievements while adhering to core values of integrity.

Building a Foundation of Excellence

Erna Kartini, S.E., MBA, Head of the Assessment and Training Sub-Directorate, elaborated on the training’s technical aspects. She emphasized the program’s alignment with the UGM Rector’s Regulation Number 2063/UN1.P.IV/KPT/HUKOR/2020 on the Leadership Development Program. “Effective leadership hinges on three key attributes: competence, productivity, and high commitment. We trust that participants will effectively absorb the insights shared by our speakers and apply them through action learning projects in their respective workplaces,” Erna Kartini remarked.

Interactive Learning and Practical Application

The GLDP is meticulously designed to offer a robust foundation in leadership, ensuring UGM’s coordinators are well-equipped to navigate the complexities of team leadership. The program’s hybrid format allows for flexible learning, combining online sessions with in-person workshops, thereby catering to the diverse needs of the participants.

Participants will engage in various interactive sessions and projects aimed at honing their leadership skills. These sessions will cover a wide range of topics, including strategic planning, effective communication, conflict resolution, and decision-making. They will also have the opportunity to learn from seasoned professionals and industry experts, gaining valuable insights into effective team management and leadership strategies.

Cultivating a Culture of Continuous Improvement

The GLDP underscores UGM’s commitment to nurturing leadership talent and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and excellence. By investing in the development of its leaders, UGM aims to enhance its institutional capabilities and drive positive change within the academic community.

Participant Perspectives and Anticipated Outcomes

Participants have expressed high expectations for the program, anticipating significant personal and professional growth. “I am eager to apply the skills and knowledge gained from this program to lead my team more effectively,” said one of the coordinators. Another participant added, “The opportunity to learn from experts and engage in practical projects is invaluable. I believe this will greatly benefit my role at UGM.”

Looking Ahead

As the program progresses, participants will continue to receive support and guidance to ensure they can implement what they have learned effectively. The GLDP aims to create a ripple effect, where the benefits of enhanced leadership skills extend beyond individual coordinators to impact their teams and the broader UGM community.

By fostering a new generation of capable and visionary leaders, the GLDP is poised to significantly contribute to UGM’s mission of achieving excellence in education, research, and community service. (HR/Rista)
