Public speaking skills and communication techniques are functional skills for Education Staffs (Tendik) Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). Public speaking and communication techniques are convenient; it helps Tendik distribute information to UGM stakeholders and improve competence and confidence.
Given the importance of improving Tendik’s ability to speak in public and communicate skillfully, the Directorate of Human Resources (DSDM) of UGM holds Public Speaking and Communication Techniques Training with the theme: Explore Your Talk Skills And Be A Good Speaker! Participants are expected to understand and master public speaking techniques, especially at official conferences. In addition, participants can also master various Public Speaking methods and communication techniques. Public Speaking and Communication Techniques Training was held online on Tuesday, August 10, 2021, with a total of 200 participants who came from all work units at UGM.
Secretary of DSDM, Paminto Adhi, S.E., M.Si., had the opportunity to open this training. Paminto said that public speaking training is beneficial. After participating in the Public Speaking and Communication Techniques Training, Tendik is expected to understand, master, and implement public speaking delivery strategies.

The first topic is Public Speaking and Public Speaking Practice. The first speaker is Zainuddin Muda Z. Monggilo, S.I.Kom., M.A, Zainuddin is one of the Communication Lecturers at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences UGM. Zainuddin Muda conveys aspects that are fundamental in composing the message. In practicing Public Speaking, speakers need to pay attention and identify the audience. Practicing Public Speaking aims to make the delivery of the message more directed and conveyed appropriately. The session ended with a discussion and Q&A. One of the trainees asked how to present a rigid topic that kept the participants from being bored. Zainuddin Muda stated that one of the strategies to increase participants’ enthusiasm was to prepare compelling materials.

Communication Techniques and Communication Techniques Practice in Presentation Media is the second training topic. The speaker is one of the Communication Lecturers of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Lisa Lindawati, S.I.P., M.A. Lisa conveys two general goals in communicating, namely to inform and to persuade. Lisa also explained some consideration aspects in choosing a presentation medium and the importance of learning from mistakes is also one of the strategies in communication techniques. At the question and answer session, one of the trainees asked how to strategize when dealing with audiences of age ranges. Lisa Lindawati and Zainuddin Muda stated that identifying the audience is one of the crucial factors so that in the preparation of the material, the delivery style can be relevant to the audience’s age range. Based on their experience, young audiences are more likely to enjoy storytelling and are more likely to appreciate images and videos. Meanwhile, adult audiences are more likely to focus on delivering material simply by following relevant examples.

Participants are allowed to give testimonials through questionnaires. Agung Aji Prasetya is one of the Faculty of Animal Science participants; he stated that the training is “beneficial for self-development.” He also hoped DSDM UGM may possibly provide training that enables Tendik’s potential to be more maximal in performing services. In addition, there were also participants from the Center for Security, Safety, Occupational Health and Environment, Denny Kakung Putraku, who said that the training mechanism was satisfactory, running according to the timeline, and the speakers were highly informative in explaining the topics.
