Yogyakarta, July 2024 — Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is steadfast in its commitment to nurturing a new generation of educators who embody academic integrity, research excellence, and dedication to public service. This mission was realized through the Basic Training Program (Latsar) for its newly appointed permanent lecturers, held from June 24–28 and July 2, 2024, using a hybrid format. Sessions were conducted online via Zoom and in person at Hall C, West Concourse of Grha Sabha Pramana (GSP) UGM.
The program welcomed 36 participants, with 33 attending on-site and 3 joining remotely from abroad while pursuing advanced studies. Designed as an integral part of UGM’s human resource development strategy, the training is mandatory for all new permanent lecturers during their orientation period.
Empowering New Lecturers with Institutional Values
The training was officially opened by UGM’s Vice Rector for Human Resources and Finance, Prof. Dr. Supriyadi, M.Sc., who emphasized the importance of the program. “Basic Training is a pivotal milestone for every new lecturer. It equips them with a comprehensive understanding of UGM’s institutional structure, governance, and core values, enabling them to integrate seamlessly into our academic environment. This foundational program also highlights UGM’s commitment to community service, such as our hallmark Kuliah Kerja Nyata (Community Service Program), which reflects the university’s dedication to societal contributions,” he remarked.
Prof. Supriyadi also stressed that the training fosters a sense of belonging and prepares participants for their journey as educators and researchers at UGM. It introduces them to the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, UGM’s human resource management policies, and career development pathways, ensuring they are well-prepared to excel in their roles.
Diverse Expertise and Interactive Learning Modules
The program featured an impressive roster of instructors, including UGM’s Vice Rectors, Directors, Heads of Work Units, and distinguished faculty members who are experts in their respective fields. The curriculum covered a wide array of topics, ranging from UGM’s organizational culture and governance to research ethics, teaching strategies, and innovation in public service.
The training included a blend of lectures, group discussions, and case studies to ensure participants gained both theoretical knowledge and practical insights. On the final day, participants took part in a Building Collaborative Teams workshop at the Agro-Technology Innovation Center (PIAT) in Berbah, Sleman. This outdoor session encouraged teamwork, effective communication, and problem-solving, fostering a collaborative spirit among new lecturers.
Integrating Excellence and UGM Values
The overarching goal of the program was to instill a deep understanding of UGM’s vision and values while empowering new lecturers to uphold the highest standards in teaching, research, and community engagement. Participants were encouraged to embrace UGM’s core principles of integrity, service, and innovation, ensuring they contribute meaningfully to the university’s mission to become a globally recognized institution.
One participant shared, “This training was transformative. It provided clarity on UGM’s expectations and opportunities for us to grow, both as educators and as researchers. The collaborative team-building session was particularly impactful in building relationships with colleagues across disciplines.”
Future-Ready Educators for Global Impact
With the successful completion of this year’s Basic Training, UGM reaffirms its dedication to cultivating educators who are not only experts in their fields but also role models for students and peers. The training ensures that new lecturers possess a strong work ethic, collaborative spirit, and the ability to contribute to UGM’s mission as a world-class institution.
As UGM continues to lead in higher education, programs like Latsar remain essential in fostering a dynamic academic community that thrives on innovation, inclusivity, and a commitment to societal betterment. (DSDM/Rista)
