One of the obligations of young lecturers is to prepare and carry out studies, in doctoral degrees, to support the credibility of the institution to achieve the vision of a predetermined mission. Young lecturers need to prepare and plan carefully several things to continue their studies, especially study abroad, both in substance such as research to be studied, promoters, intended universities, scholarship requirements, and readiness of life needs to be required.
To support the achievement of this commitment, the Directorate of Human Resources of Gadjah Mada University (DSDM UGM) held a webinar for UGM Lecturers entitled Sharing Motivation and Strategies for Successful Studies. The webinar on Thursday, July 29, 2021, was opened by the Vice-Rector for Human Resources and Assets, Prof. Dr.Ir. Bambang Agus Kironoto. In the opening session, Prof. Bambang stated that the need to present strategies and scholarship recipients’ experiences of study for lecturers who are and will prepare themselves in carrying out further studies is very important. The point of view of scholarship recipients will be very useful for UGM Young Lecturers who want to apply for study both domestically and abroad.

The first topic was presented by Ir. Dwi Larso, M.SIE, Ph.D., who is the Director of Scholarships at the Institute for Education Fund Management (LPDP). He presented the introduction of the LPDP scholarship program. The selection and opening phase of the LPDP scholarship during the second phase is on August 1, 2021. An explanation of the implementation of Doctoral studies during the Covid-19 Pandemic was also explained to all webinar participants. In the discussion session, many participants enthusiastically asked questions to Mr. Dwi Larso about the implementation of Doctoral studies both technically and administratively.

The second topic was presented by drg. Isti Rahayu Suryani, M. Biotech., Sp. Rad. O.M. She is a Lecturer in the Faculty of Dentistry who is currently conducting Doctoral study at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. She is an awardee of the Dikti scholarship in 2019. Drg. Isti Rahayu Suryani, M. Biotech., Sp. Rad. O.M. delivered a topic on Tips and Strategies for Successful Study with Higher Education Scholarships. She explained for lecturers who want to carry out Doctoral studies, it is necessary to set a strategy in choosing the intended university. She also presented some scholarship funding at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and invited several young lecturers to join her studies at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. Webinar participants also asked a few questions and continued with a discussion about Mrs. Isti Rahayu’s study experience in Belgium.

The next topic is about Tips and Strategies for Successful Study with LPDP Scholarship presented by Heyvon Herdhayinta, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D. She is a Lecturer in the Faculty of Economics and Business who has completed her Doctoral study at the Macquarie University of Australia in 2018-2021. She presented some tips on passing LPDP scholarships. She also recounts academic life at the Macquarie University of Australia. Closing the third session, Ms. Heyvon Herdhayinta, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D. provides information on a wide range of universities in Australia and recommends webinar participants for passion in finding a preferred university.

The last topic was presented by one of the Faculty of Engineering lecturers in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He is Ir. Muhammad Akhsin Muflikhun, S.T., MSME., Ph.D., one of the awardees of JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) scholarship who has successfully conducted his doctoral study at The University of Tokyo, Japan. He presented several study experiences while in Japan, especially at The University of Tokyo. He also conveyed the background of JICA scholarships that he got, as well as tips to get the scholarship. In addition, he also explained various scholarships in Japan that can be accessed by UGM young lecturers.

Based on the implementation of the Webinar Sharing Motivations and Strategies For Successful Studies, there are several testimonials from webinar participants. Dianila Oktyawati, S.A., M.Acc., Ak., BKP.,CMA was one of the webinar participants from Vocational College UGM explained “The webinar event was excellent, all the speakers were very inspiring.” She hopes that DSDM UGM will hold webinars like this more often. Economics and Business lecturer at Vocational College UGM, Mukhlis, S.E., M.Acc. also said that “Doctoral studies webinars not only provide inspiration and motivation but also offer solutions for me who are trying to find opportunities to continue my doctoral studies. Hearing the experiences and tips of success from alumni and doctoral degree students who have received scholarships inspires and fosters motivation.
